Core Music Programme
Your musical journey, from first notes to the bandstand!
The Core music programme provides students with a structured pathway for developing their musical knowledge, instrumental skills and ensemble experience.
Students progress through a series of levels, combining individual instrumental tuition, music theory and practical ensemble experience. As students advance, they have the opportunity to participate in chamber music, the school band, the youth Band and eventually our own symphonic wind band lead by our director Mro. Roderick Bugeja
Introductory Level
The introductory level is designed to help students begin their instrumental and theoretical musical journey.
Students receive:
30-minute weekly group Theory of Music – Grade 1 session.
30-minute weekly individual instrumental practice session with their chosen instrument tutor.
Practical lessons begin in October, while theory lessons begin in January. The first three months provide an introductory period for students to explore their instrument and basic music notation.
Entry requirements:
Born in 2017 or earlier, or
Completed the Music Explorers Adventurers.
Students who already hold a Grade 1 Theory of Music certificate from a recognised examination board may be exempt from the theory sessions.
Level 1 – Grade 1
Students continue developing their instrumental skills while gaining experience playing as part of an ensemble.
Students receive:
30-minute weekly individual instrumental lesson.
1-hour weekly School Band session focusing on ensemble techniques and solfeggio.
Chamber Music Sessions to support preparation for examinations and concerts.
Prerequisite:
Completion of the Introductory Level.
Level 2 – Grade 2
Students continue their progression towards Grade 2 while developing stronger instrumental and ensemble skills.
Students receive:
30-minute weekly individual instrumental lesson.
1-hour weekly School Band session.
Chamber Music Sessions.
Prerequisite:
Completion of Level 1 or a Grade 1 certificate from a recognised examination board in the chosen instrument.
Level 3 – Grade 3
At Level 3, students continue to develop their technical and musical abilities while gaining further performance experience.
Students receive:
30-minute weekly individual instrumental lesson.
1-hour weekly School Band session.
Chamber Music Sessions.
Opportunity to participate in the Youth Band – Banda Żgħażagħ Vittorja.
Prerequisite:
Completion of Level 2 or a Grade 2 certificate from a recognised examination board in the chosen instrument.
Level 4 – Grade 4
Students at Level 4 undertake more advanced instrumental training and begin to experience participation within Banda Vittorja.
Students receive:
40-minute weekly individual instrumental lesson.
1-hour weekly School Band session.
Chamber Music Sessions.
Youth Band – Banda Żgħażagħ Vittorja.
Introduction to Banda Vittorja, including participation in marches and attendance at band rehearsals as observers.
Prerequisite:
Completion of Level 3 or a Grade 3 certificate from a recognised examination board in the chosen instrument.
Level 5 – Grade 5
Level 5 provides students with more advanced instrumental training and increased involvement in the activities of Banda Vittorja.
Students receive:
40-minute weekly individual instrumental lesson.
1-hour weekly School Band session focusing on ensemble techniques and solfeggio.
Participation in Banda Vittorja activities, including marches and concerts.
Attendance at rehearsals in preparation for concerts and other official activities.
Level 5 students are expected to participate in the official band activities and rehearsals specified by the school and society.
A Complete Musical Journey
Throughout the Core Course, students are encouraged to develop not only as individual musicians but also as ensemble performers.
