School Band

The George Vella School of Music School Band gives students their first opportunity to experience what it means to play as part of a wind band.

All students studying at Levels 1 to 5 are required to attend weekly School Band sessions. Under the guidance of the School Band tutor, students learn how to listen and respond to other musicians, follow a conductor, maintain their part within an ensemble and develop the attitude, discipline and techniques needed for successful group performance.

🎶 Weekly Sessions

Students attend a one-hour group session each week, combining:

• 🎵 Ensemble playing – learning to perform together as a band.

• 🎼 Solfeggio – developing musical understanding and aural skills.

• 🎺 Practical activities – applying musical knowledge and instrumental skills in an ensemble setting.

The sessions are designed to complement students’ individual instrumental lessons and help them put their musical skills into practice.

🌟 From the Classroom to the Stage

Throughout the scholastic year, students work towards a School Band concert, giving them the opportunity to perform in front of an audience and experience the excitement of playing as an ensemble.

The School Band may also participate in other events organised by the George Vella School of Music, providing students with additional opportunities to perform and gain confidence.

🤝 More Than Playing Music

Being part of a band teaches students much more than musical technique. Through regular ensemble playing, students develop:

• Teamwork and cooperation

• Listening and communication skills

• Discipline and responsibility

• Confidence in performance

• An understanding of how individual musicians contribute to a larger ensemble

The School Band also provides an important first step towards the wider musical community of Banda Żgħażagħ Vittorja and, as students progress, Banda Vittorja.
